Kickstarter LunaTik

Kickstarter is an innovative way for artists, designers and entrepreneurs to get cash for new projects. They put proposals on the website and apply for funding. Viewers of the website can then pledge money to support a project. Donors typically receive a discounted price when the item comes out.

The best example of this is Tik Tok and Luna Tik. They are watch cases designed for Apple’s new iPod Nano. So far they have raised over $900,000 in funding!

Several months ago I ordered a Luna Tik, it just arrived.

The Luna Tik is nicely made of CNC’d aluminum with a black silicone strap. The color and texture of the aluminum are a perfect match for the silver iPad Nano. Fit and finish are excellent and it fastens securely around the iPod Nano with screws.  The Nano inside is well protected from bumps and scratching. The ends of the case are open so the iPod Nano’s 30 pin connector and headphone jack are accessible.

As a watch, the iPod Nano is pretty good. Particularly if you’re a fan of big watches. It’s accurate and has a stopwatch and countdown timer. It’s also an iPod, pedometer, and FM radio. The silicone strap is comfortable and adjusts through a very wide range of sizes.

One downside is that you have to press a button to turn it on, the display goes blank after a few seconds. The battery is good for a couple of days at best, so the Nano needs to be recharged every night. The time is automatically updated when synching with iTunes.

There’s no way this is even close to being waterproof. Use caution around H20!
